jesu was born from the smoldering remains of Godflesh, after founder Justin K Broadrick dissolved the band in early 2001. Emerging in 2004 with its first recordings, jesu became Broadrick’s deeply personal sonic experiment — a bold fusion of crushing heaviness, haunting melody, and introspective electronics. From the outset, the aim was clear: to blend the emotional pull of shoegaze and dream pop with the downtuned weight of metal and delicate, mournful vocals. The result was a sound both ethereal and immense. Music that felt like it was collapsing under its own emotional gravity. jesu quickly carved out uncharted territory, laying the groundwork for genres critics would later dub doomgaze, ambient metal, and shoegaze metal. While Godflesh had hinted at these textures as far back as the late ’80s, jesu brought them into sharp focus — immersive, expressive, and unmistakably Broadrick.
